By2025, GM intends to introduce 30 new electric vehicle (EV) types; by2035, heavy-duty trucks will be the only ICE vehicles available. A tenth of the price of the 2010 Volt batteries is offered by the company's Ultium battery technology, a pouch-type lithium-ion cell that offers a pack-level cost of almost $100 per kWh. In a joint venture with LG Chem, Ultium cells will be manufactured at two brand-new facilities in Ohio and Tennessee, with a combined annual battery capacity of 70 GWh. Engineers have more freedom to arrange Ultium cells in a variety of ways so that a battery pack will fit into the limited space of a car. The Ultium pack will last longer and does not lose capacity due to excessive DC fast charging. Wireless cell monitoring, another innovation in the Ultium battery pack that reduces wiring by up to 80% when compared to the Bolt EV, is another feature.
